Phagwara (Punjab): A statue of B R Ambedkar was allegedly vandalised during encampment Palahi nearby Phagwara on Sunday, sparking protests by dalits who blocked roads during many places in a district.
The statue’s carried arm was found disfigured and shop-worn in a park during encampment Palahi, military said.
Protesting opposite a incident, members of dalit encampment blocked trade on Phagwara-Chandigarh bypass in front of Palahi village, during Bhullarai channel of a bypass and Phagwara-Palahi channel on Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road, they said.
Led by BSP personality Jarnail Nangal and Ambedkar Sena Moolnivasi Punjab President Harbhajan Suman, protesters carried anti-government slogans. The protesters also threatened to call for a bandh on Wednesday if a culprits are not arrested by then.
They purported that it was a second such occurrence of vandalisation in two-and-half-months. Earlier, a statue of Ambedkar was shop-worn in internal Palahigate mohalla in a inserted night of Apr 4-5 and military unsuccessful to snippet a miscreants, they alleged.
They also purported that miscreants had intentionally vandalised a statues in a localities with dalit race in sequence to emanate tension.
They demanded evident detain of culprits and confidence for all statues of Ambedkar.
The protesters carried their blockades after DSP Manpreet Singh Dhillon positive them of prompt action.
The protests kept a military on tenterhooks as Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was in Phagwara given final night and was holding Sangat Darshan programmes in villages there.
