A group of scientists including dual University of Southampton physicists has due an examination it believes could answer a long-standing question: is sobriety quantum?

Quantum mechanics is a speculation that accounts for a poise of elemental particles and simple little systems, including their robe of appearing in dual opposite places during once. However, there is no initial justification to advise that sobriety – that is now usually explained by exemplary earthy laws – competence act in a quantum manner.

In a paper published in Physical Review Letters, an general group led by UCL and including Professor Hendrik Ulbricht and Dr Marko Toroš from a University of Southampton, outlines an initial exam it believes could infer either sobriety has quantum characteristics.

In a due experiment, dual little masses would be celebrated freefalling on adjacent paths a fragment of a millimetre apart. The masses are done to correlate gravitationally with any other as they tumble by a array of captivating fields, in an sourroundings giveaway of any other influences.

Any ‘entanglement’ celebrated between a masses – any of that will follow both paths concurrently during a tumble – would endorse a quantum inlet of gravity.

Professor Ulbricht said: “We are some approach off being means to lift out this examination for real, though it’s intensely sparkling to be means to outline a theoretically applicable proposal.

“If we can use an examination like this to uncover but any ambiguity that sobriety possesses a quantum nature, it would offer a stirring plea to a laws of production – and open adult whole new avenues for physicists to explore.”
