Autonomously-Driven Car from Uber Killed Woman in Arizona

Two days ago a self-driving car from Uber hit a woman in Tempe, Arizona. The incident was deadly and later it was confirmed by to Gizmodo by Uber and Tempe police. It is the first known case when an autonomous vehicle kills a person.

Incident happened around 10PM at the intersection of Mill Avenue and Curry Road. The car responsible for this happening was 2017 Volvo XC90, driven fully autonomously. The self-driving vehicle had one operator and no passengers, Uber said.

According to police statement on Twitter the victim was 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg. She was crossing the street at the time she was struck.

“The investigation will address the vehicle’s interaction with the environment, other vehicles and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists,” an NTSB spokesperson said.
